-Super Bo Noise itch.io page
The Bo Noise is a Pizza Tower shitpost fan character that is a poorly drawn version of the Noise. However, more recent interpretations of the Bo Noise don’t really fit this description and a better descriptor for the little critter would be “dinky” or “bootleg”. Some common traits for iterations of the Bo Noise to have include the tapers of their cape coming out of their mouth, a weird hat instead of a mask, lack of mustache, tan skin, and a red tint on the nose.
The character has existed for quite a while, with their game being in production for a couple years. The fact that it started development while Pizza Tower was still being made might be a bit of a surprise to those who weren’t aware of Pizza Tower’s pre-launch following. Although a couple early builds have been posted online, the final product would be released on July 4, 2024, over a year after Pizza Tower’s release. Additionally, there isn’t much known about Super Bo Noise’s production and I’d rather not snoop around, just to respect privacy and such.
One of the most noticeable things about the game from the start is the smaller quantity in content. The crew behind the have stated that they aren’t planning to add any additional content, assumingly out of the desire to not overwork themselves, which is understandable. Nonetheless, the content provided is really enjoyable and the transition from a mere shitpost game to a passion project is impressive. Even then, when looking at the intricate design of The Mid Escape, perhaps the passion was always there.
Comparing the final product with the earlier builds, they are two totally different Tuc Crackers. The music, level design, gimmicks, and, most noticeably, the art see a total retooling in the final build. No longer does Bo Noise dash through blatantly unfinished levels painted with crude sprites and pre-existing content alongside the occasional Jeffy from SuperMarioLogan as the Weenie Mount, accompanied with either a stanky midi or messes of noise (I’m into it but I don’t know you) in the background. This little guy now traverses through two completely finished levels with unique gimmicks and a wide range of zany sprites that still keep their shitposty sides, with an unique soundtrack that really differentiates it from other Pizza Tower fangames. (More on the soundtrack later.)
Bo Noise’s moveset is very similar to Peppino’s, spare some additional abilities from earlier builds of pizza tower. These abilities are either quite helpful, such as being able to start slides by grabbing while crouching and being able to ground pound through ladders, or pretty useless, namely the Kung Fu move. Some other interesting features of the game include the collectable mail, the secret Savories, and various secrets. The mail can be garnered through doing certain things in game such as getting certain ranks, getting all the Red Eclipse coins, getting the secret savories, etc. This feature occasionally provides some silly lore and typically has some amusing dialogue, so it’s worth looking through. There are only two secret Savories, one for each level: “Bo Crystal”, Bo Noise’s original character, in the Midway, and “Fruitsette”, which is basically just Noisette with roller skates on, in Lake Eerie.
For the secrets, I’ll just list the main ones:
*Update: SHE'S GONE!!!!!!!!!! In the most recent patch for the game, Pizelle still appears the first time when you boot up the game and enter the area, but you will receive a letter from her once leaving. Re-entering the secret area will reveal that she's no longer there.
*Update AGAIN: SHE'S BACK! Okay I don't really have anything to say here she's just back lol.
(Technically speaking, there are some unfinished levels in the game’s files avasilable through the developer console I think. I have linked a video of someone exploring it in the “Tuc-Tastic Links” section. )
For bonus, here’s a rather obscure thing I’ve discovered while playing through the Lake Eerie level. If you manage to jump all the way near the front of the Raisin (the game’s equivalent to Pillar John), they will punch you and you will take damage. Not only that, but doing this will give you fucking mail. For context, you initiate the escape sequence for this level by hitting the block from behind and doing it from the front is a little tricky to figure out. This experience makes me wonder how much secret shit does this game really has.
I’d like to talk about my personal experience playing the game. Since there’s very only so much in the game, unless you’re trying to U rank the two levels, a session would be at most 30 minutes. The gameplay is quite clearly intended for people who are already familiar with the control scheme of Pizza Tower. There’s some decent challenges to be had and the levels are fun to navigate. I typically boot up this game for the secrets or to show off specific animations to a friend or something. I especially love showing off that secret with Evil Leafy. Speaking of object shows, there are a couple classic object show sound effects used in the game. There’s the “Bulleh” sound effect used for enemy spawners, this dramatic noise that kinda sounds like the Vine Boom used in escape sequences (though I’m not entirely sure if this is an object show sound effect), and one of the classic crowd scream effects that I’m not very sure how it’s triggered; I assume it involves killing multiple enemies at once. That last sound effect in particular fascinates and perplexes me, as it is hard to trigger naturally and has played only two or three times for me. To make this sound effect even more perplexing, I don’t think I’ve ever heard it in other people’s playthroughs. Like how every artist draws Bo Noise a little differently from another, is every copy of Super Bo Noise personalized? Will a giant, menacing Bo Noise head float after me in the hallways of Glorious Mr. Grape’s Glorious Grape Mansion? Should the public make many an analog series based off of this phenomena, maybe a Friday Night Funkin’ mod if they feel a little devilish? Will Evil Bo Noise jeff the kill me? Nonetheless, I overall find myself more enamored by the aesthetics and somewhat specific humor within the game.
(Correction: the object show screaming sfx is one of the enemy screaming sound effects, which functions like how some enemies scream in fear when you run towards them in Pizza Tower. I’m still keeping this section cause it’s funny.)Lemme add a very recent Bo Noise experience here because it’s really funny to me. The game’s Twitter account recently announced that if you check your mailbox through December 21 to Christmas, you’d get some special mail. They did implement a special mail message for Halloween, so this was to be expected. As of the 21st, I haven’t been able to get this mail for some reason and I was trying to troubleshoot this during my play session, which involved looking at the original tweet to see if I was missing something, thus focusing my eyes away from the game. Practically every time I tabbed out and went back to the game, Bo Noise would be fucking dead and lying on the ground, blood, tears, and green cartoon snot oozing from the poor creature’s body. For context, this is one of Bo Noise’s idle animations, some of which are quite violent. This idle animation in particular starts with Bo Noise referencing the “deal with it” meme, then their singular tooth falls off with blood coming out, they start to cry and then eventually collapse dead onto the ground, with some strange leaf looking object slowly sweeping them away into nothingness. What odds did I end up with where this kept happening to me?
Update: I was able to get the mail the following day (the 22nd) and I might as well show it off here.
Speaking of aesthetics, I would like to mention the game’s soundtrack. Most of the tracks are created by Uni M. (who I suspect did some of the artwork or animations as well), with some tracks by VI and U4mhh. It stands out quite a bit compared to the other Pizza Tower fangame soundtracks I’ve heard, where they try to emulate the soundtrack of the original game. Sure, Super Bo Noise has a couple of these tracks, but it also tends to get rather jazzy or bossa nova, having a range that is fitting for the inconsistent protagonist. Granted, some of the tracks sound amateurish in a couple places, but there is a passion and sincerity behind it, as well as a willingness to play with dynamics. And when a track hits… it hits pretty damn well. If there is one track you end up listening to from this game, please let it be the music for the cave sections in Lake Eerie, “A Broken Heart and a Bladder”. It is such a surprisingly serene, magical, and dare I say dramatic piece of music. The track also reminds me weirdly enough of some 80s Japanese music. Typically, this type of influence or aesthetic would be quite blatant in a track, but it feels rather subtle, and if it is an influence, the track doesn’t make any attempt to put it on the forefront. The subtlety of this detail to me allows the track to still stand on its own and have substance. Maybe it’s not one of the greatest video game music tracks ever made, but it’s definitely one of my top favorite tracks I’ve ever heard in a video game.
The most striking part of A Broken Heart and a Bladder is the fact it feels so invested in itself despite the shitpost-y tone of the main character and aesthetic. It doesn’t care that it’s for a Pizza Tower shitpost game; it only wants to immerse you in the domain it lives in, a rather universal goal of all video game music. In general, the game has this weirdly sincere feeling to it, this genuine desire to make a genuinely enjoyable game despite its limited playtime. I would like to get into this sincerity in a different section, but to close this off, Super Bo Noise is a very charming game that is worth checking out if you’ve got a good grasp on the Pizza Tower control scheme.
There’s something incredibly charming and cute about the Bo Noise to me. It’s odd. It’s odd that I find this little feller genuinely cute when a portion of the jokes made with them is them getting maimed. This becomes even more peculiar with the fact that I find something about the Bo Noise to be distinctly sincere. Why, Xavier, this is a shitpost character! Every Bo Noise is dipped in a kraft cheese-like substance to preserve its frivolous aura like that one dream sequence in Tomodachi Life! What can this thing provoke other than the amusement you get from typical pieces of repainted humor?
A lot of the sincerity comes from the Bo Noise’s more recent depictions. Unlike typical repainted humor, the Bo Noise isn’t entirely referential and seems to favor a distinct absurdness that is reminiscent of Pizza Tower, while also very much being their own thing. Sure, you can still see the ties to shitpost humor, but their design also covers a variety of cartoony appearances. I’ve seen some sprites of Bo Noise get compared to Ren and Stimpy, but that really doesn’t cover it. Many of the sprites for Bo Noise, to me, take on a 50s/60s/70s, somewhat UPA aesthetic. The mach 3 and superjump cancel moves remind me quite a bit of Cow and Chicken as well. Although Bo’s sprites take on a variety of aesthetics and styles, it utilizes these things to be its own thing and to showcase the flexibility of Bo’s character design. Furthermore, that flexibility offers a rather heartwarming opportunity: to see everyone’s individual touch in a piece of art.
I suppose this is where I get much more subjective. I believe even the humor has a tinge of sincerity to it. A portion of the gags done with the Bo Noise involve memes from the 2000s/2010s era (the awesome/epic face, ima firing mah lazah, etc.), and it does feel like that some depictions of the Bo Noise are trying to be to “cringey”. Thinking about it now, quite a lot of jokes involving the Bo Noise are very "lol random XD" in nature, which adds to the lil' feller's "cringe" aura. (I think nostalgia’s definitely a factor, as “cringey” memes can make people feel nostalgic.) Personally, this game feels too happy to show ill-will towards these former memes of the past. Even when the Bo Noise sometimes gets "punished" for engaging in "cringe" behavior, the game's environments are littered with silly internet emoticons that one may consider "cringe". It feels like these types of jokes are made by the same people who like these jokes, in a weird way. That’s at least the case with the Kittydog references, since Kittydog apparently worked on the game as well. Granted, Kittydog’s involvement makes me feel very conflicted since I know she’s done some dubious things in the past, but I tend to not invest myself in internet drama so I don’t know the whole scoop. Even with that, I can’t help having a soft spot for these references to the animation meme community since I have experience with said community. Even with the dubious nature of some of these jokes (Kittydog references, ima firin my lazer I recently learned has racist origins), I hope it still makes my point clear that the humor doesn’t feel mean-spirited, it’s more like a “haha that’s silly” kind of vibe.
A more miscellaneous reason I enjoy the Bo Noise is that they’re canonically nonbinary. Something about me is that I can get crazy attached to some nonbinary characters/characters I see as nonbinary. It’s not everyday when it happens, but when it happens, I fucking cling to that. I like that Bo Noise’s nonbinaryness is sorta just… there, but it is nonetheless expressed with pride. The Bo Noise, as a character, feels so unapologetic for their own weirdness that it makes me very happy as someone who does the same on a regular basis. The fact that they’re a furry also adds to it for sure lol. I express a deep love for “ugly” or “weird” characters such as the Bo Noise, so this infatuation I have for the guy is no surprise.
I suppose I could use the Bo Noise as a transition to a topic about taking stupid characters such as them way too seriously and doing crazy shit with them, but I think I should save that conversation for my “Hysteric Fanart” page. I’ve already sorta covered what I mean about this already, with the feelings of sincerity attached to the Bo Noise and all, but again, this is a topic I’m very passionate about and would be better for another page. To conclude the more “proper” section of this shrine, I think the Bo Noise is a super amusing character and their game is something you can get a good kick of. It’s really pleasant to see the final product for something like this; the evolution is quite impressive. And uhhh yeah. Tuc tuah the mic rula the old schoolah you wanna bo? I’ll noise it to ya
Note: these are in no particular order. Also these sprites aren't in the best quality since I took them off the Pizza Tower fangame wiki lol.
I really like these sprites cause of how they depict Bo. I've already mentioned before that they are quite Cow and Chicken-esque. I've only watched one episode of Cow and Chicken but I think I could see this Bo being in the show. Also this depiction of the Bo Noise is pretty neat cause they made the Bo Noise fat, which is something you rarely see. Typically, they are portrayed being more scrawney than the Noise. Perhaps these sprites are a reminder to us all that we should depict the Bo Noise as a fat lil' thing more often.
This one is strangely mesmerizing and feels really in-character for Bo. I think the mesmerizing movement comes from the smooth transitions between the designs and also just some really good expressions. The "gulp" snap part of the animation reminds me of how Pilotredsun characters move. This game is chock full of good art I'll tell 'ya. I like how this HUD animation characterizes the Bo Noise: inconsistent, inspired (as in you can tell that the drawings are based off of something), seemingly vacant at first, yet distinctly weary, all the while being a visual splendor. Also I think the part where Bo Noise looks around is a reference to Senior Parmesan? Pretty neat if that's the case.
While it's nice to see Bo Noise depicted as fat, I also think the skinny depictions of Bo Noise are very very charming as well. It really is fun to see how vast the interpretations of the Bo Noise's design are. Like, look at this one! So spindly and tall, really distinct! It's like they're some kind of kooky rockstar! I also really like this sprite because it feels like something I draw; the artstyle feels weirdly similar to mine.
I have a somewhat humorous experience with this sprite. I first saw it in a video exploring Super Bo Noise's debug commands in a segment where the person playing was exploring an unused/unfinished level. For context, this is the HUD animation for when you get a 50+ combo (or com-bo if you will). However, in that video, the HUD animation appeared out of nowhere, which bewildered the fuck out of me. What made it even funnier to me was that this is a remake of an early HUD animation for the Mid Escape.
The contrast between these two animations is crazy. The old one portrays Bo as this laughing masochist, while the the new one makes Bo into this sopping, poor guy who's getting executed for some unknown reason. Again, these are for when you get a 50+ combo, and they give off two totally different vibes. Even when experiencing a great acheivement, the Bo Noise suffers for some reason. It's almost like the Bo Noise is this sort of Doise-like character, though they have more comedic range.
Lemme just take a moment to talk about what I like about the new 50+ HUD animation. Like a lot of Bo's sprites, Bo is stylized in a really fun way that it's hard to keep your eyes off it. This is one of those designs that feel especially like a mid-1900s/UPA cartoon. There's a lot of cuteness factor to this design as well, which also makes this gif as saddening as it is funny.
I like this animation for similar reasons that I like the one kung fu animation I showed off. I think the skinny Bo Noises tend to have a lot of character in them, and this one is no exclusion. This Bo feels kinda dorky and cowardly, like they would act and sound like Shaggy from Scooby Doo. I also just noticed this is one of the few designs for Bo that give them a bowtie, which looks really cute here! I speculate that the bowtie sometimes used in these designs is based off of how Pizzelle from Sugary Spire had a bowtie in her earlier designs apparently? It would make sense since it seems like the team behind Super Bo Noise get a lot of amusement from the fangame. Overall, another super fun sprite.
There's a chance you've seen this one before if you linger around on Pizza Tower Twitter or similar communities. Honestly, this one feels so iconic because how it captures quite a few common concepts used by the game's art direction. It's random, vaguely a reference to meme (oil floats on water rage comic), has that mid-1900s aesthetic, and is weirdly so damn well animated. I like how the "choppiness" of some parts of the animation are used to illustrate the Bo Noise hopping in place and struggling to put the oil on. There's quite a bit of character in this animation too. I like how it portrays the Bo Noise as someone who is very eager to douse themself in oil for some reason the audience will never know. Another thing I like is that there's more focus placed on the action itself than on the meme it's potentially referencing. It makes the reference feel quite subtle, providing more satisfaction to those who get it. The utilization of the game's mid-1900s aesthetic for this animation also adds a bunch of charm to it, and it already has a lot of that because of the reasons I've listed earlier. Man, you can really talk a lot about this one animation, huh?
Now here's a pretty humorous one. Like what the fuck is happening here. Like yeah, it's Bo Noise wallclimbing, but the animation usually happens pretty quickly in game so it's hard to really see all the motion involved with it. I like how the Bo Noise tumbles about in this animation, makes it a lot more zany. Even though all the poses are all squashed, they're still quite varied, making the animation super fun to look at. Looking into characterization, I enjoy how Bo Noise is potrayed as this thing between man and creature. Sure, the Bo Noise is quite humanoid here, but they're given this blank expression (like some kind of fish) that makes it feel like they're doing this out of an instinctual drive, meanwhile failing to do so. Also I need to say that I like it when Bo Noise looks like just some guy in a pajama onesie, and these depictions also tend to look like they're mascots for a 1950s detergent company.
The final blow animations got some fun "oomph" to it, but this one is easily the funniest. It's pretty startling and feels distinctly violent compared to Bo's other animations. It's not really often that the Bo Noise gets a chance to inflict such cruel violence onto another (when that typically happens to themself instead) and it feels pretty rewarding. It reminds me of the sense of power you get in Pizza Tower when playing as the Noise or Peppino, possessing that chaotic energy of the game and slinging it back. Sure, this is a Pizza Tower fangame, so this feeling is to be expected, but it's neat that the team has found other means to convey this idea.
(I should clarify that wrote this before I learned about the aforementioned racist origins of this meme. I'm keeping this section in because does contain a key idea in the analysis I do of Bo in this list. I imagine the crew implemented this unknowing of its origins, which is something I assume most people aren't aware of. However, as trivial it may seem, I think it's good to aknowledge problematic material, even in things we enjoy.)
Already shown these before and talked about it already but THESE SPRITES MAKE ME SO HAPPY. They make me happy in that "teehee!" kind of way. Look at the Bo Noise expressing their pride so joyfully! It's so damn cute! I genuinely find this character so cute and charming I can't take it.
This is one is nice and flashy. There's a good sense of energy to it, helping to capture the feeling of getting a P rank (or U rank in Super Bo Noise). The first half of this animation comes off as prideful, embracing its odd self. At the same time, however, this animation does something similar to the 50+ combo animation where it places the Bo Noise in a miserable situation (i.e. literally killing them) despite the situation it's used in being a triumphant one. Again it's simultaneously really funny and really sad for me to see these jokes with the Bo Noise. Looking at it at a more analytical angle, it reminds me of the constant feelings of being uncontrollable yet powerful when you play as Peppino in Pizza Tower, which is more something newer players experience. The Bo Noise themself seems to be rather unapologetically themself, but gets punished for it at random intervals. Like a Talking Tom or a Pou. Even though these jokes exist, I still stand with my earlier point that this game doesn't feel like it has genuine ill-will towards "cringeyness" since the game is so doofy, silly, and happy.
Honestly there's many more animations that I really love from this game, but these are the ones that were most easily available.
Okay uhhh yeah that's pretty much it I think OKAY XAVIER OUT!
